  • Overview

Foss is Free and Open Source Software.  Its source code is freely available and users can change or improve its design by modifying the source code.  This approach has gained wide acceptance and its potential benefits are being increasingly recognized by both individuals and corporate players.

  •  Objectives

‘Free Software’ seems too good to be true; and yet that is what FOSS is.  Nevertheless the awareness and use of FOSS is abysmally low at least in the North-Eastern Region.  FOSS is perceived as software that is difficult to install, use and maintain.  There are fears that there is not enough expertise readily available when users require assistance in solving even simple problems.

The objectives of this two-day workshop is precisely to address these concern.  Specifically, we have the following objectives:

·         To increase the awareness about the availability and benefits of FOSS both at the academic and governmental level

·         To set up a Linux User Group at Guwahati that can assist Linux users in troubleshooting problems

·         To build up resource centres in the region for providing expertise in the deployment of FOSS and developing more products in the FOSS arena.

  •  Highlights

The workshop will adopt a hands-on approach, focusing more on the practical aspects without neglecting the fundamental theoretical concepts (Linux File System, Kernel, Shell).  Hence most of the sessions will be held in the computer laboratory.  One of the strategies will be to actually install Linux and run common applications and utilities in the Linux environment.  In this context some aspects of system administration (Web Server, Proxy Server and Email Server) will be provided.  Separate sessions will be held for those more technically inclined.  For the participants from the government sector special session will be held looking at successful case studies in the use of FOSS.

Student participants will have the opportunity to take part in on-the-spot contests.  Certificates of participation will be awarded to all the participants who are present for all the sessions.
